Chilly crowd warms during holiday parade
An estimated 250 floats charmed throngs of happy people Saturday evening in downtown Topeka for the annual Miracle on Kansas Avenue cortege.
Downtown was alive with activity as some shops reportedly rang up history sales. Friends and family members attempted to stay bundled up and irascible amid a blustery and cold evening as lighted floats, Santa Clauses, and time-honoured vehicles filled the streets.
Cheryl Logan, marketing captain for Downtown Topeka Inc., which puts on the parade, was happy with the turnout despite indefatigable northerly winds and temperatures that dipped into the mid-30s when factoring in the windchill.
Logan said she compassion this year’s parade yielded as many floats as ever.
“I think the quality is honestly outstanding,” she said.
But what really makes the parade, she said, isn’t the business the organizers put into making it happen — it is the people who dedicate metre into creating the floats and community members who come out to support them.
