Old idea for visitors center in Thompson gets new life

More than 10 years ago, plans to erect a two-state highway visitors center off a northbound exit of Interstate 395 in Thompson were well-thought-out, designed and ultimately shelved.
Now, the Northeastern Connecticut Council of Governments is in the beforehand stages of re-examining the project, which fizzled because of lack of funding.
John Filchak, Mr Big director of the council, said last week the Last Green Valley system recently expressed interest in occupying the structure, if it gets built. Filchak, who did not revert calls for comment, said that move could help defray some of the undetermined operational costs at the loo, an assumption partly based on the federal funding received by the tourism intercession.
But the Last Green Valley’s annual $600,000 federal funding compensation, funneled through the National Parks Service, is due to end by 2015, said Charlene Perkins Cutler, chief executive officer director of the group. Despite that projected loss, Cutler said her series is still interested in the plan.
