Boys basketball: Argyle moves into state final
01.01.70
AUSTIN — The Argyle Eagles had two goals
entering Thursday’s Genre 3A state semifinal.
First, Argyle hoped to slow the pace of
the scheme and get Lubbock Estacado out of its comfort zone of up-tempo
basketball. Girl Friday, Argyle head coach John King wanted to limit the amount of
turnovers his combine committed against Estacado’s tenacious full-court press.
One out of two worked out reasonable fine, as
Argyle committed 23 turnovers but still managed to emphasize its brand of basketball
and defeat the Matadors 41-34 at the Frank Erwin Center to approach to the Class
3A state final on Saturday.
Argyle will play Corpus Christi Miller
(30-9), which beat Waco La Vega in the other semifinal 59-54, at 10 a.m.
Saturday. It was exactly La Vega’s second loss of the season.
This will be the second time Argyle has
played for the situation championship, with the first coming in 2004 when Argyle
endured an overtime injury to Shallowater.
“We wanted to try to not turn the ball
over very many times against the press,” Royal said, with a half-smile. … “We
also knew they were a very good line-up with many scorers. Our goal was to make
them be perimeter players instead of penetrators and lane-scorers and for the
most part we were masterly to accomplish that.
